It depends on the gold fish, many of the fancy goldfish do better in slighly warmer and stable water, the pond goldfish are what are generally "coldwater." But if the fish has been kept it's whole life (so far) in room temp water, you'll want to bring it up gently if your worried about it. Stable water temp helps many of the ones that are prone to swim bladder problems and internal bacteria infections.
Aquarium Fish Monthly/Magazine last month did a good article on goldfish, with identification and proper care that was pretty good. If you could find yourself a copy of it, that would help you alot.
I wouldn't put anything else in with them, it will just stress out the goldfish, and they aren't going to be tiny forever. They will need the 10 gallons.
Though you may be able to get something interesting like a dwarf frog, or small fiddler crabs. If you are able to bring the water temp up (if it isn't already) those both would do well. The crabs require a tight lid though..but the small frogs do well, and they only get about 1 1/2" max..and are pretty long lived. I've had 2 in my freshwater cichlid tank for almost 3 years now...but they are looking pretty old.
