Turtles shed?

Any turtle keepers out there? Last summer I got a "free" painted turtle from a co-worker, little bugger cost me $100 just to set up tank for it. Anyway, today I noticed plates of shell loose and found one floating in tank. Much like large scales falling off. I kept turtles years ago and know about the curling edge and whitish deformation from lack of vitamin D, but I don't remember anything like this. Looks like normal reptilian skin shedding to me. Yes? No? Any thoughts?
