white kind of fish are in it? could there be a male fish in there trying to fertilize eggs? (couldnt resist) when i picture thick white water i think of really hard water.... is that a possibility?

hay Mark,

heres some more info..

it started after t tried to feed my discus some beef heart mix. they ate it and there wasn't any on the ground after i was done feeding. I’ve been feeding it for like a week then it started to get milky. it’s been almost 2 weeks now that it’s milky.

I’ve got a 40 gal and I’ve done a 10gal water change so far. i really don't to change all the water. also, i have been running some carbon for 2 days now.

my plants are still pearling only at the top. i know that the bottom plants are not getting enough lights.

heres what i have done do so far, did a 20gal water change last night to day its the same thing again.

i do think that it an algea bloom. b/c the water from the tank looks green in the bucket. what do you think??

plz help my plants are suffering!

TIA,

souk

the water itself is green? if so then I would put all my money on freefloating algae... which could have been sparked by increased nitrates as a result of uneaten food. (my moms tank has the same thing i have tryed many 'algae destorying' products didnt work for me. Im not sure but i wouldnt use that stuff in a planted tank.

if you want a quick fix, get a diatom filter (my lfs used to rent them) they will clear the water up right away.

A micron filter will do just as well, and is cheaper than a diatom, and you can keep a micron filter on constantly. If it is green algae.

If you look from the side of the tank, down the length, does it look green or white? If it is more whitish, chances are you have a bacteria bloom and not algae.

How long as the tank been running for?

I would check all of your properties. Nitrate, Ammonia, Nitrite, PH, KH, and Phosphates. It will give you a better idea on how much water you need to change; but without seeing it I would do a 25% per week change until things clear up.
