Please look at soon to be 29 gallon lighting

Hi, I'm about to start a new tank, a 29 gallon glass. My concern is over the MH. Do i mount it horizontal with the tank and hood, or vertical (perpendicular). Please see the rather bad diagram below. I just used regular MS paint.

Also, the ballast i have is a probe start 250 watt, so it will work with the XM 10k. Has anyone tried the 10k XM bulbs yet?

I will make this a clownfish/anemone tank, but looking at other possibilities. Thanks.

I also have the same question.I have 2 x 175w metal halides and 2 x 110 VHO I am putting over a 90G. In some of the recent pics I have seen a lot of the MH bulbs seem to be mounted front to back rather than side to side, which is the direction I was planning on installing mine. Maybe it depends on your reflector style? I don't have reflectors yet so maybe that will determine what I do?

For most applications, mogul base metal halide lamps are installed perpendicular to the front of the tank. Here is a typical reflector for a mogul base metal halide lamp: http://www.marinedepot.com/a_lt_mh_s...nfo.asp?CartId=

There are exceptions, however, and the most common one is when the the front-to-back tank dimension exceeds 24", e.g., with a 96"L x 30"W x 24"H 300-gal tank, using Spider reflectors, you would want to employ 4 of them mounted parallel to the front of the tank. This would give you better front-to-back coverage.

PFO makes both perpendicular and parallel reflectors for mogul base metal halides. The parallel reflectors often accommodate supplemental fluorescent actinics and can be combined to make one long reflector.

Most double-end metal halides are mounted parallel to the front glass of the tank. The one exception that I can think of is the little PFO mini-hood for DE lamps that is designed to be mounted perpendicular to the front of the tank. Virtually all other luminaires for double end metal halide lamps have the lamps mounted parallel.

I don't know about the 10K XM but I just got the 20K XM from Hellolights...it's awesome. I have one 400/W over my 58/g Oceanic.
