Iwaski lighting.

Thought I would post this pic, after a thread in the clam forum. I played with a combo of Iwasaki,s and 400w Radium/pulse starts. Could never get enough light over the 30in. deep tank with the pulse start driven Radiums.

Finally gave up and sold them, although I kept my single 400w pulse start and its driving one of the Iwasaki bulbs. If I even move and downsize to a smaller cube type tank, I will run a single 400w Radium over it.

I now run only two 400w Iwasaki bulbs over the 6ft, tank, plus a pair of 40w normal outputs actinics. Here is a center pic. All the corals were re-started from smaller frags and have been given lots of growth room.

Steve, the tanks looks great with that combo. I ran it for a while and really liked it.

So I guess you dumped the Sunburst bulbs?

Steve?

Awww, Mark forgot me already during his move.

Hi Mark,
I still have the Sunburst bulbs. Like the Radiums, I may still use them if I downsize, which is likely to be soon. Going back to a cube, but much smaller than the one your doing.

Doug,
What the hec was I thinkin I think I've known you for almost 5 years. I'm in the middle of getting the closet ready for the tank. The hole is cut and framed inside the closet. I just need to cut out the outer side of the wall. I should have the stand done this weekend. Do you have any tips for me? The picture below shows the wall (wood panel side) and the door to the closet where the tank will be. Its bigger then the picture shows.

Doug,
I don't know how to use these new fangled state of the art message boards. I put the picture in but it never came up. Let me try it again.

Doug,
Here's another picture of the same area with the closet door closed. You can see next to it is the central air units closet and below that is a vent. Where the vent opens up there's a huge open space down there that vents up through walls and outside. I'm going to put my chiller and ballast in there. For staters I'm also going to vent the closet into that area. I'll be keeping a good eye on it, if I start to see any moisture then I'll have to run a vent pipe down from the roof into the closet, its not going to be too hard to do.

That should keep it well vented and being in California, you have no problems with the loss of heat during venting.

The chiller & ballast wont add to much heat to the cavity from the AC? Must be good air flow outside. That should sure reduce the heat in the tank area, having them remote.

I agree with Doug. Ventilation is a must or the heat and the moisture will be big problem for an enclosed space. You can also use evaboration to cool the tank, but this will add to the moisture problem. Consider a chiller if you plant to use mucho light and circulation for a SPS tank. The larger pumps will add lots of heat into the water.
