It will help keep your "live" rock colorful if it is. If you have any Coralline Algae on it, that needs some light. Also any other flora, like macro algaes need light. So I would say YES. I have those simple timers you can get a Walmart on all my bulbs, so they always come on at the same time and turn off at the same time, makes it simple.

has anyone thought of cutting the lighting wires and installing a dimmer knob? i have only 2 65W PC lights and has only one switch and thought that a dimmer would be a nice touch to add the dusk lighting... dim lights just before the timer turns off then in AM it turns on and they still dim untili i set it up? just a thought? any comments?

new2salt, that sounds like a plan. i was actually looking for some cheap LED lights at home depot today to set up a little moon glow thing. but that dimmer would be perfect to set up on a single actinic, and a timer would be even better. good idea, i might try it. sounds like a project.

I'm pretty sure if you put a dimmer on a flourescent ballast it will damage it. That's why you only see dimmer switches on "regular" light bulbs, where current can be reduced.

Check Radio shack. You can use an old PC power supply to run them. But remember Moon light is VERY VERY DIM... even at Full moon time there is very little light on the reef.

Read Pomme's dream tank thread, Ninong gives all the details there down to 0.0000XX degree!!

hey new2salt, can you get me another beer and do my laundry. ha ha, just fooling, thanks for the sites. I think that radioshack idea is a plan. Hey poseidon, do you know if a dimmer on LED's would work? just an idea, but i definitly want to put some moonlights on my tank, even though i dont keep corals. i might just have to do a single NO Actinic with my spare 48" light housing and ballast, put it to good use. throw a timer on there, and be in the money. thanks
