Hi Jasace,
No you do not have to place anything on top of your tank to separate the surface from the fixture. I think the statement used is to say not to let the bulbs come into direct contact with the water surface.

I just set-up my new 35 gallon tank for salt water, my question was this, do i need some sort of material between my light and water, or how far up should i go for the light, my light fixture says an i quote "This fixture is for use over covered aquariums only. Do not allow fixture to come into direct contact with water." My light is an Aqualight Deluxe series 4-Tube 20-inch 96 watt
thanks everyone, i have only been a member for 2 days yet i have learned so much

what about air bubles coming up and popping at the surface, now there is a plastic peice at the bottom of the fixture, but if i do decide to put something between the fixture and the water surface what do you suggest, could i cut a peice of plexi glass, of shuld i buy a peice of regular glass, will the plexi glass absorb the light from my reef designed bulbs
thanks again, i can't teel you how much i have appreciated this website

Hi Jasace,
Thanks for the compliments on the website. I hope you enjoy your time at Reefland.com.
The bit of spray will not affect the bulbs and can be cleaned off the bulbs during regular maintenance.
If you do put something over the aqaurium, understand it can effect the gas exchange as it will trap it; I really recommend not covering the tank. If you are overly concerned about some salt spray, figure a way to put something under the bulbs and not over the tank; if that makes since to you. But also know any cover between the bulbs and the water column can reduce the amount of light that can penetrate the column.

Thanks Scott, thats what i was wondering was the gas exchange of the light penetrating
thanks again
Jason
