Ok
In these days of saving money. I have a question or 2? HQI bulbs are the quartz halogen, right? The bulbs come in a 150 watt version? What would be wrong with buying a shop light for 12 dollars that has the 150 QH bulb in it and replacing it with the correct spectrum bulb? This seems viable to me. Though the shop lights like this get extremely hot. Most (all) even come with a shield, although I am not sure if it is a uv shield or not. Has anyone tried this or what are every bodies thoughts on this? I think that this would be a nice thing to try if it is a possibility. Well??? |

I think the problem will lie with the ballast diffrences that power a shop light compared to a mh light. But, I think that the fixture appears to be the same and could possibly be used for HQI bulbs. I am not sure if the glass on the shop lights are UV filtered as they should be but a small amount of research should answer that one.

I thought the color temp for halogen was around 4500k which would be way yellow for most tanks.
But let us know what you find out. ------------------ Mark Play Well |

the color temp in the shop lights like that is low, in the 3-5 thousand k range. But Ushio, makes the 10,000 k quartz hologen bulb(mh) So next month I will purchase a bulb and give it a shot, whats the worst that can happen, Ill blow 90 bucks or so on a bulb!

I thought about doing this myself. I think it will work as long as you use the correct ballast. I have the model # of the advance ballast that powers an hqi bulb if you need it. I can post it later if needed.

The standard shop lights have a Tempared UV glass over them. I checked some out today. I think they would work as a holder provided they fit the bulbs.
The Halogen bulbs are not correct but I think he was refering to using the lamp assembly with a correct K bulb. It is interesting that they make a 10kk in Halaogen. I also know that these babies pull some amps, or atleast the one i say today did. ------------------ ------------------------ Paul C Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler.
