Post Light for Refugium - LOA Model 9266?

Everyone seems to recommend the LOA Model 9266 for my in sump refugium, however went to Menards to buy and noticed its meant to be hardwired and doesnt have an electrical 'plug in' cord.

Is there a different better option? Can I just use one of those 20W shop lights or maybe something with a plant grolux bulb.

What about a single or twin tube tank fixture (such as a 20" All Glass - that should be around 40w)

What are my work arounds here - I dont want to do any wiring, I just want to plug it in and go.

I have a 9266 LOA on my 20 gal sump - works great. I am not electrically inclined at all, but even I found it easy to hook this light up by using an extension cord, take off the rubber coating with wire cutters to expose the wires, twist the wires on the LOA with the extension cord wires, wrap with electrical tape, and plug it in.

Try it! Great light for 30 bucks!

Sure Mike. With a little actinic it'd be a good, cheap way to go on a small tank, or larger softie tank.

To get a 3 strand cord and add it on is very simple. Just buy a heavy duty 3 strand extension cord and cut the end off. Match the colors. The only real important one is the ground (green) make sure that is hooked up to the ground of the cable.

A little tape and a razor blade or sharp scissors and you be fine.

The Grow lux bulb is really for non-submerged plants, and will have too much of the wrong spectrum, causing algae blooms.

In worst case, you could use a shop light with the right bulb, but it will not come close to the output that the LOA 9266 has. The LOA fixture runs at a very conservatively rated at 65 watts vs. your mentioned fixture of only 40 watts when brand new.

I use the Lights of America Flourex model 9266 on my main tank. It is 65 watts with around a 6500k spectrum.
I have also added the 9w, loa fixture and put a 9 watt blue/actinic bulb in it. In addition I purchased the 2x13 retro kit from ahsupply, and those are also actinic/blue?
This gives me a total of 100 watts on my 10 gallon tank. I spent less than 80 dollars on it, and that includes the shipping from ahsupply.
The LoA stuff can be found at most Home depots and other various home improvement/ hardware stores across the nation.

If you have a Costco nearby they have the LOA (6560)? It's a prewired light (like the floor mounted halogen work lights). I took the handles off mine and it works perfect over my 10 gallon refug.

The 65watt bulb is about 11" - 12" long and is a large screw in bulb, mogul? The housing it comes in is 13" X 8" X 5" tall. I use one on my 15g with a 28watt LOA Circle Bulb that I converted to a 28watt Blue PC bulb. 93watts for about $65, cant beat that. It took a little wiring etc. but it was no problem, and I'm no electrician. I am considering adding another 65watt white or another 28watt blue, I'm not sure which, then its time to build a canopy.
Check out www.lightsofamerica.com and look at outdoor Flourex lighting, you will find the model 9266.
Alot of Home Depots and Menards carry these lights.
Good Luck,

The work light model appears to be better suited for aquariums. They are at Wal Mart for $25 ($7 less than Menards), they have a cord and switch installed and you have better mounting options with this one IMO.
How much is the one at Costco? Bill.

Sorry I didn't get the part #, it was is the hardware aisle with the other outdoor and work lights. The case of the one at Walmart is white as opposed to brown at Menards, switch v. photo sensor, cord v. bare wire, tubing handles v. elec. box mount, unfortunately white v. polished reflector (a little switcheroo could solve this). IMO a better fixture than the one at Menards.
Wowafish, Is this the same fixture at Costco for even cheaper?
Bill.
