Carbon will help polish the water, change it out every week or so. Not sure how long it will take but it should definitely help.

That depends what the water is cloudy/colored from. If the water is yellow then yes the carbon will be very effective in clearing the water. If you have a phyto bloom (cloudy or hazy) then no it will not.

Here is a simple test to see if the color is in your water. This will require 2 white 5 gal buckets. Fill one with a fresh batch of salt water and the other with water from your tank. Set them side by side and compare the color of the bottom of the bucket. If they look close to the same it's not your water but the light.

One other thing to check is to make sure the nipple on the bulb is pointed up away from the water. Some double ended bulbs can be mounted only one way but others can be installed wrong. The nipple is located in the center of the bulb on the inner envelope.

HTH,
Kevin

Just looking from the picture, it does not appear to be the light making the tank appear yellow. The light looks pretty white/blue before it penetrates the water and even down into the water column the first few inches.

Do you use NSW or ASW? Is there any algae growing in the tank?

the carbon should work if its not the lights. take some water and put in a glass then take it outside to see what color it is with sunlight. If its yellowish in sunlight then its the water if its not then its the light.

You can run some normal output (NO) actinic lights pretty cheap.

I would think by 12 to 24 hours you should see a considerable difference.

Just so that you know, the carbon has to be placed in a position where the water will be forced to go thru it before it will help considerably. If it is just sitting in the sump, it will not likely help at all to any appreciable level. You might want to get a canister filter or something to run temporarily to force the water thru the carbon.

I keep my carbon in my overflow box... Works great as most of the water that makes it to my sump is forced through the carbon first...

Do I count NINE fish in there??? Holy smokes that is a heavy load and could be the cause of your yellow water. Not to mention some of those fish look pretty large! What do you use for a Protein Skimmer?

I have a 135 Gallon tank with a 40 gallon sump and I only have 6-7 fish tops!

hahaha. sad to say but yes i do have 9 fishes. it used to be a fish only tank and no one told me about the limiting of the fish. so theyve been there since forever. none of them died so i dont really know how im going to move them. i think that really is the reason but i really cant do much unless i remove the rocks and try to remove them. so what are my options?

WoW I have been reading your thread and looking at your pictures you have alot of fish I think your skimmer just cant keep up with the bio load. Before you buy a UV sterelizer make sure you read the pros and cons many reef keepers do not use one since you will weaken the amun system of your fish. Wish I had more time to help you out. If you want e-mail me and ill try.
