Smile Think My Lights Will Work????

IM NEW TO THE FORUM AND AM CURRENTLY SETTING UP A 125 GAL LONG TANK W/ A CUSTOM STAND THAT I HAVE BUILT W/ AN ENCLOSED HOOD..... HOWEVER AFTER BUILDING MY HOOD AND MOUNTING 4 - 72" VHO BULBS TO THE LID OF THE TANK I WAS TOLD THAT I MIGHT HAVE TO MODIFY MY HOOD TO GET THE BULBS FATHER FROM THE WATER FOR HEAT PURPOSES....LIGHTS ARE CURRENTLY ABOUT 3 IN FRM WATER ....... WILL THIS STILL WORK IF I PURCHASE SOME 3" ICE CAP FANS........ AND IF SO HOW MANY WILL I NEED?...... CAN I MOUNT THEM ON THE LID?....... AND SHOULD I ADD EXTRA VENTS TO THE LID BESIDES JUST THE FANS?.......ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED..

First off...WELCOME TO REEFLAND!!!

3'' seems a bit close but after installing a couple of fans (I would have 1 blowing in..the other blowing out) you may find that heat is not an issue. I have always kept my lights approx 8'' or so off the surface. you dont want water splashing up on the bulbs either. If it were me..I would modify the canopy now to allow for room for adjustments down the road if/when needed. such as MH bulbs someday?

Mark, you seem to be into these halides lately?

I agree that the addition of a couple of fans would do the trick, one blowing in and the other out. With this configuration, you wouldn't need to add any additional vent holes in the canopy.

3" from the surface may be a little close however if you can keep the bulbs clean (bi-weekly cleanings) I think you'll be fine.
