Actinic lighting, all night?

Got some new lighting today, and was told that the actinic was safe to leave on all night. Just wondering if this is true?

Thanks in advance!

Safe? Yes. Good for your animals and tank? Probably not. They use the night to rest and recuperate just like we do... plus there are usually other things that use the darkness as protection when they come out to forage thru the detritus for food (worms, shrimps, 'pods etc)

Moon lights are ok, they are very dim by comparison to actinic lights.

That's what I thought...Guess I have to learn to go with my gut sometimes! Thanks Sueet for the prompt reply!

Always trust your instincts

And never trust someone whose advice is directly linked to making them money (unless it's your kid!)

It is most certainly not true. Corals (and other photosynthetic animals) require a minimum of 10 hours of darkness in each 24-hr cycle for respiration.

It is OK to have a very weak "moonlight" over the tank during the period of darkness but certainly not anything strong enough to interfere with normal photosynthesis cycles.

Awesome guys! Thanks for the response. Now I just have to get a timer to make everything automatic. I love this forum!

That would be an excellent thing for her, she would feel like she was 'sharing' with you

I absolutely agree! Since she doesn't really get any say as to what goes into mine, she will get to have her say on her aquarium!
