Moon Lighting - Part 2 - What is Moon Light
A moon light, in the simplest terms, is a device that simulates the light that is reflected by the moon on to a coral reef. That is a pretty easy definition, but be aware, that there are several aspects to the design of moon lights that need to be taken into consideration. For example, how much light is too much? What color should the light be? Moon Light is pretty white, but what about a moon light 50 feet under the water? What kind of bulbs should you use so that heat will not be an issue?
The actual moon light is a simple device, yet it provides several benefits for your aquarium. First, the added light acts as a “night light” for your tanks inhabitants. When the lights go off at night, even if you dim them slowly, the tank will eventually be totally dark. This can be stressful to the fish that are used to some light, even dim moon light. And, of course, one of the main objectives of the aquarist is to reduce the stress levels on his stock.
Second, the moon light is simply amazing to look at. It adds a beautiful glow to your aquarium at night, and you will find yourself spending way too much time staring into your tank. Can’t sleep at night? Pull up a chair and watch for awhile. It is simple amazing and relaxing.
A third benefit is that the simulated moon light makes for a more natural environment in the aquarium. Some aquarists believe that this increases the growth rates of corals, stimulates coral reproduction and induces spawning in fish. Being a lay person in this area, I will go no further and will allow others to research and debate this subject further.
The reduced stress on the live stock and enhanced beauty of the moon lights are enough for me.
