Arrow Moon Lighting – Part 3 – The Color of Moon Light

Now that you are familiar with moon lights, its time to decide on a color for those lights. There is a lot of information out there on the different colors of daytime lighting for the aquarium. The goal is to try and reproduce, as closely as possible, natural sunlight.

So, it would probably make sense to try and produce accurate moon light as well. Moon Light is simply reflected sun light, and when you look at moon light; it appears to be just white light. We can easily recreate white light in our aquarium by using standard white light bulbs.

However, at 30 feet below water, the moon light is refracted by the water and becomes more of a blue light. So, using a blue light bulb makes more sense, if we want to accurately reproduce moon light. Not only that, the blue hue looks pretty cool.

There is another option. Experienced aquarists tell us that most of the aquarium inhabitants are incapable of seeing red light. Apparently, this red light is filtered out quickly once it hits the water. Since, the animals 30 or more feet down never get exposed to red light; they have not developed the sensory perception to detect it. What this means to you, is that you can put up a pretty powerful red moon light for viewing you tank at night.

My preference is to use the blue lights for various reasons. It is a truer representation of real moon light, it provides a “night light” for the tanks inhabitants which would reduce the stress, and it is at the same time more pleasing on the eye than the red lights would be.

Again it’s in my opinion it comes down to user preference.

Thanks Charlie the purpose of this is to help people understand moon lights. So much attention has been placed on daytime lighting that not many people realize the benefits and enjoyment that can come form placing moon lights in their tank.
