I believe this is the abstract for the Brown (1999) citation that was included in the paragraph I paraphrased from Sorokin: http://www.springerlink.com/(q02p2m5...lts,1:100407,1

The Sorokin (1995) of course refers to his book Coral Reef Ecology, which is out of print as far as I know. There are a few copies of the paperback version available every now and then but it is $81.95 plus shipping if you can find it. I know it's available at a couple of U.K. college bookstores but then shipping would be expensive.

Here is the subscription information for Coral Reefs: http://www.environmental-expert.com/...0338/index.asp

    It's probably expensive???

You can even purchase individual articles online: http://www.springerlink.com/(ywpbzf4...lts,1:100407,1 That's the Brown (1999) article.

I wonder how much a full subscription costs? Probably a couple hundred bucks a year???

I think I just answered my own question. It looks like you can become a "full member" of the International Society for Reef Studies for only $80/year and then you get a subscription to Coral Reefs as part of your membership: http://www.fit.edu/isrs/

Just a tip, anyone can get any of these papers for free. Just go to your local library (of which I assume you are already a member, if not get a membership, that is free as well). Then ask for their Inter Library Loan (ILL for short) department/help desk. All you need is the full citation - name of author(s), title of paper, journal it appeared in, date, volume, and pages. In a few days to a few weeks, they call you up to pick up your photocopied article.

Yes, I tend to forget about public libraries. They are certainly an excellent resource if you live near a good one. When I lived in San Francisco, I was within walking distance of the main library.
