Ballast on Carpet Floor?

I have a PFO ballast running two 400w MH lights. Is it ok to leave the ballast sitting on a carpet floor? Will it get too hot? The LFS said it would be fine, but I thought I would double-check.

I have the same one I put two pieces of 12x12 tile under it until I got my self up.

I wouldn't, but then again---I'm kind of manic about that type of thing, especially since we rent and don't own (even if we owned I still would be manic). Suggestion, go to hardware store and invest in 3 good sized ceramic tiles. Put two of them on the floor side by side and the third bridging the bottom two (like a very short pyramid). You can then put the ballast on the top tile. You can also use the tiles as hot dish or cup pads that will protect your tables.
