PC pin interchange to swap lamps.

Does anyone know how to swap a straight pin .... bulb for a square pin :: bulb?
i.e. which are the hots and negs on each?
Seems that a few of the German style bulb fixtures just use a female bullet type wire connector to slide onto each pin and retroing a Japanese receptacle would be easy if one knew which wires were which.
Reason I'm asking is that it seems the square pin bulbs are more readily available, thus cheaper. Thanks, Bill.
