Alot of people just use the actinics for aesthetics, it looks nice!!!! The corals do pick up the blue lite, and I personally think that it helps the fish acclimate from the halides, but that is just my opinion, no scientific facts behind it.
does having lighting that takes the dusk to dawn or vice versa provide a better environment for the tank, just wondering before i go pick up MHs on wednesday

I am of the opinion that the more you can do to simulate "real world" conditions for the fish will make it a healthier environment. I am not aware of any shock factor statistics on fish, but I can tell you being awakened by bright light is not one of my favorite ways to wake up in the morning.![]()
"That is the sound of inevitability..."
Hey at least they can't get woke up with the Darn phone ringing:eek3:

I never used the dusk to dawn lights, but in a way I still do about the same thing.
I turn on the MH lighting about an hour after I get up. That way the lights in my house are on at least 1 hour before the MH.
I also unplug the phone when the MH is off.(Dont want to wake the fishes)HAHA
The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple!
I personally Have my blue turn on 1 1/2 hours before my brights, then my brights turn off, and 1 1/2 later the blues go out and the moons come on. Pretty nice effect.
