a little input please

i have just got back into the hobby whan i was in it before i had a fish only tank so lighting was not a big issue here is my question i just purchesed a 90 gl tank and i got a hamilton technolgy power compact that has 2 10000k 96w each bulbs and 2 actinic blue or however you spell it also 96w each will i have any trouble with corals or anything else i might find to put in it

Hi paladine28,


That isn't a lot of light for that tank. You could keep low light requiring corals such as mushrooms and some zoathids, but I wouldn't go any further than that. You would nee to upgrade to 4 more bulbs or a different lighting system to have a larger selection.

ok does anyone have any cost effictive lighting ideas mh or what? give me some ideas manufactures and size thanks

I think the only "cost efficient" way of doing lighting is to do it right the first time. J Unfortunately I listened to my LFS who was only looking to make a sell and had to buy my lighting all over again. You may wish to look at www.hellolights.com. They have a great selection of lighting and have some reasonable prices. You don’t state whether you have a canopy on your tank. If so they make some retrofit kits that you can DIY. For a 90 gal tank I would look into 2ea 250watt MH and a couple of VHOs for actinic. I have 2 175watt MH on my 75gal and although adequate, wish I had gone with 250s. Good luck.
