Question if my BTA was not getting enough light would he hide under a large rock over hang(cavern) which he is doing or would he try to climb to a higher spot in the tank

RBTA do not like ther base esposed to the light. there is not much you can do in the way of moving it. It may be just trying to find the proper conditions in your tank. If you are worried abut lack of light , give it some food for energy
