I was reading another article and I think you want to keep an eye on depth, as always. I am not sure that the LED will get good results deep, but with enuf space on your LR to mount coral higher up................you see where I am going here?
I have been waiting for 3 years for Sanjay to come out with something on LEDs.
I heard him talk in the Tri-Cities then and he was not impressed then. He has obviously had the time to give us something worth reading.

never mentioned a darn thing about price metal, which in my experience is prohibitive

True, those LED fixtures have always been extremely over-priced, very neat tech though....
There used to be a guy over in Lexington who swore by LED's... He had a bunch of those Solaris fixtures hanging throughout his shop. Every time I went in there and mentioned anything about lighting he would pull out his par meter immediately and start saying "look at this" while he went around to each one messing with all the parameters.
Anyway, I guess he was trying to sell me one of them and he was doing a good jog the first time until I asked him what one cost... I think he got mad when I laughed but he seemed to be somewhat used to it. That was when Solaris first came out and I was still keeping discus so it's been a while and at that time the price of one of those hoods was like 5K+, I wanna say they were even more, but since then both he and Solaris have gone under so that should tell us something.
I will admit though that he was able to give a pretty good spiel with that little par meter and the adjustability of the lights themselves are amazing. Any one of the hoods he had would simulate several different geographical regions supposedly (barrier reef, fiji, belize, etc) from daylight to dusk. Pretty neat but I didn't really know enough, still don't, about PAR and what not to get too excited about it back then.
I built an LED hood with basic electrical knowledge for a 37gal for under 300$
