When I cycled my tank, I let them rip the full photoperiod. JMHO
I am 2 weeks into my new setup and cycle ( no more ammonia and nitrites high) It's a 55 gallon, 40 pounds of live sand and so far about 40 pounds of cured live rock. I was able to give my green chromis to a friend with a well established tank (thank god for the fish sake). My question is with just the live Rock and sand how long if at all should my lights be on. I was told that it would probably do more harm than good to have the lights on at all during this process. I am currently running the lights about 8-10 hours a day.

I see nothing wrong with running the lights during cycling. If you're worried, then just run them for five or six hours a day and then gradually increase the photoperiod.
The reason some people don't run the lights is because they're worried about nuisance algae.
