If the light has the plastic protection cover on it, you are good to go. I have had reef tanks for about 12 years now and never had a glass cover on any one of them. JMHO
Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to this site, but have had a saltwater FOWLR tank for about 4 years. I am upgrading from a 55g to a 90g. My question is this. I purchased a 48 INCH CURRENT USA SUNDIAL T5 HO 4X54W W/ TIMERS & LED. I have a hood on my tank and this one was the only one I found recommended for under hood installation. However, the manual says that the tank itself must be covered to keep water, salt creep, etc from entering the light and causing early failure. I have read several times on this website that having an uncovered tank is the way to go for gas exchange, lighting, etc. Does anyone know if not covering it will harm my lights or is covering the tank the way to go?

I think your biggest concern is your fish.
site:liveaquaria.com jumping - Google Search
I left my canopy open about 1/2 inch last year (I was running a temporary canister filter) and lost a goby overnight. A regrettable mistake I plan on never repeating.
If you have jumpers, eggcrate is an option. About $10 at Home Depot for a 4 x 2 sheet, in the section with ceiling tiles. Very easy to cut or saw to shape.

I do have the plastic cover over the bulbs and electrical equipment, so I will go with an open tank.
thanks
I think you made a good choice!!!!![]()
