    220 fowlr lighting

    Hi,

I have read that in a fowlr the light isn't that important but I do want something that will grow coralline algae. I recently purchased a 220 gallon that is 72x24x30 and am looking at an 8 bulb T5 HO with 312 total watts. Is that gonna be enough or do I need to step up to the 12 bulb with 468 watts? I don't want overkill so as to cause any nuisance algae.

    Thanks

Coralline doesn't require much lighting to grow well. I have it growing in my skimmer body, in the sump, which is lit by one of those energy saver compact bulbs from home depot. The lighting you're interested should be more than enough. Also, lighting has little to do with controlling nusance algae. It's true that intense light can contribute but nutrient control (like phosphate and nitrate) is far more effective. Just a thought...

That's probably a ton of cash and a load of light. Check out rapidled.com or ecoxotic: Panorama Modules - Aquarium LED Lights

Thanks I will go with the cheaper lights, I was just thinking I would need more because of the depth of the tank (30 inches).

I'm considering order 4 of these kits to install in the canopy of a similar sized tank

Coralife Aqualight Compact Fluorescent Retrofit Lighting Kit, 2X65 Watt, 24 inch

Keeping in mind this is a FOWLR tank - your thoughts?

Those would work fine for a FOWLR tank. Might get away with only 3 of them. Or see if you can hunt down the 36" PC.
