IceCap Wires
Hi All,
I am in the process of wiring my IC 660 in a 3 lamp configuration. This calls to have a jumper wire set-up between two of the lamps. In the instructions it is recommended to use AWG #18 Solid TFN wire as the jumper wire. I checked a few of the local stores, Home Depot, and have not found this type of wire. Are there other sizes that I could use/get? I know I could probably use some of the extra wire from the ballast but I would rather not as I do not know how this ballast will be used in the future. Thanks, CaptK |

You can use higher gages of wire, or what i mean is 14ga, 16ga, even 12ga. The lower the number the higher the amp carring capacity of the wire. 12ga is too big IMO. The reason they recommend solid is so that it can be pushed into the VHO lamp holder (I would imagine). You can also get any solid wire such as thermostat wire (as long as its 18 or larger) and cut out the un used wires. I would get some 14/3 household wire, all you need is a short pc I would guess and pull out either the white or black.
The diffrence between solid and stranded is the stranded bends easier

I used all AWG 16 Solid TFN to wire my 3 lamp configuration with an IC 660 ballast because I could not find the AWG 18 at HD. Works like a charm. I figure the smaller the number (the higher the gauge) the more amps it can handle so its a win-win situation.
I believe the reason why Ice Cap does not pre-wire their ballasts is due to the fact that you can wire the bulbs in so many different configurations that it is probably not cost or time effective to prewire them. Anyways, it only took about 15mins to wire up my ballast. |
