Ok The time has come to replace the bulbs in my 400 and 250 watt MH.I am currently running both 10,000k.What spectrum, if any, would be better for my reef? I have heard that clams and sps corals enjoy higher spectrum lamps 10,000-20,000k. Would it be advised to try to get 20,000k or would the change in spectrum be detrimental?Thnkx in advance for your replys.BTW the type of corals in my tank is very mixed from shrooms to red brains, kenyas to bubble, so I would need something that could meet the needs of all, currrently I have no problem with 10,000k was just wondering If it could be tweeked some.

Sorry, I thought you were getting responses... didn't realize you were just talking to yourself.
![]() As far as clams are concerned, I think you would be better off with either 10,000K or 6500K metal halides. As far as SPS is concerned, there are good arguments to be made for 6500K, however, many people prefer 10,000K. Personally, I think that a combination of 10,000K and 20,000K would be nice for SPS. As you may already know, some of the people who grow and sell SPS are turning more and more to 20,000K to "color up" their SPS. If you are trying to duplicate "natural" conditions for SPS that are found in shallow water, you would choose 6500K. But then you may not like the aesthetic appearance of the color unless you add a lot of supplemental actinics. If I were you, I would stay with 10,000K or go with a combination of 10,000K and 20,000K. I don't care for the appearance of all 6500K or all 20,000K. But that's just a personal observation.
