What is the best type of bulb to burn over a refugium? I am setting one up and will soon have mangroves as well as calurpa growing in it. The light from these bulbs will also light the sump tank where I have LR/LS. The water capacity is approx 50g of the tank.
I have a couple of LOA lights over it now. I am curoius if a "grow" bulb would be better suited.

So what's the actual length and width of the sump/refugium where lighting is required? I always liked the 96 Quad lights sold at championlighting.com or possibly a 100-175W MH if your refugium is huge.

Hey paul
![]() Are your LOA's the 27watters or the 65 watters? Im also running two 27watters on my 55gal sump/refug. seems to be doing a good job so far. If you are wanting more growth and are like me with your refugium (i watch it as much as the main tank, course i have corals in there too) I was thinking about adding some actinics to it? I know that wouldnt help the growth of macros as much as a lower K rated bulb though. I do think one of them grow lights would help though

Hey Paul,
I currently have an ~ 20 gallon refugium which is part of a refugium/sump combo and I'm using one 65W LOA 6500K light. I have a fan in the stand (stand is fully enclosed on all sides) that keeps the light fairly cool - hence it's been running great for about 7 months. The calipera grows great. Later; Dave

I had the 65w LOA's, but I just installed (2) flood light style grow bulbs (last weekend) they are yellow but the calurpa seems to have taken off all of a sudden. I soon will have namgroves in the sump and that is suppose to be a good light for them also. We'll see.

They need new bulbs IMO. I used them for a good year on a 30g I had at my office.
I wouldnt mind holding on to them as a just in case. Do you need the 65w's? I can get them at Wal-mart or Home Depot here. I think they are 20 a pc if my feable mind is correct. ![]()

Im still battling a case of cyano on my tank and I think it would help if I encouraged more of the refugium growth.....Im gonna give it another week or two....but I may just send you some money and have you buy me some (if you dont mind).....Cuz I cant find them boogers anywhere around here!! HD carries the 27watters just not the 65 watters
