    GE metal hallide

Anyone ever use the GE MH bulbs??? What light spectrum are they if you have used them. I was Home Depot today and saw them, then I went to a reef aquaria store and saw the same things. Thanks

Hi there!! Here in Australia, the GE bulb is very popular as it is fairly cheap. The bulbs we use are 6000K, which is okay, if a little yellowish. I have had good growth and colouration of SPS corals under this light. Just remember that GE is a big outfit and the bulb you looked at might not be for aquariom applications and might have a lower Kelvin rating.

    Regards Gary.

Sanjay Joshi tested a 400w 6000K GE lamp here: http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/a.../1/default.asp

Note that Sanjay says this lamp is also being sold in the U.S. as a "10,000K lamp from Hungary." Hmmm...

These bulbs did say they were made in Hungary also. They were about $25.

I don't remember all of them, but I believe they had 100, 150, 175, 300 and 400. They may have had a 1000, but not too sure on that. I went to GE's site and most of their bulbs they had listed were in the 3500 to 4500 range. I don't have the exact model #'s of the ones I saw at HD though.

The bulbs we use over here are made in Hungary also. They used to be branded as Tungsram and I think that GE bought them out. If you can get them in the 6000K spectrum, they are very good bulbs for reef tanks.

Ninong, the bulb which Sanjay tested was one from Australia which Dallas Warren amoderator on Reefsorg sent over. He runs our BB, Reefing the Australian Way.

Tell me what you think! They are going to get back with me on the pricing. The 250 watt is #26683 and the 400 watt is 26685.

Don't sweat it. I used these bulbs for over ten years on reef tanks and they work great. I can only comment on the 250 watt bulb, but heat was not a problem

    Regards Gary.

Has anyone used these in comparison to some of the other lamps such as the venture 5500k, or the Iwasaki. In the tests that Sanjay did, was there any PPFD measurements taken? This has sparked my interest...
