    Question lighting setup

right now im using two jbj 55w lights, that is two sep hoods
w four bulbs total. my tank is a forty gallon mini reef setup?
it seems pretty bright but my tank gets too warm by the afternoon.
is this adequate lighting for a reef setup or too much?
also trying to find what an ideal setup for this size tank.
i would really like to have that purple black light look that
seems to make everything glow . the kind at the shops

Sounds like you have 4x55 W power compacts. THis seems like pretty good lighting for lots of corals.
You may have to install a fan if the temperature is getting too high.
Also, the "glow" you are referring to requires true actinic 03 bulbs which are currently available at most online stores now.
You probably have a couple of blue bulbs in your setup instead.

    the blacklight look

the blue bulbs are printed "blue actinic". are these the
sames as the 03 true Actinic?

They are likely not the same thing. There are a couple different manufacturers of the "true" actinic PC's that supposedly give off the "VHO-like" light. I think that www.hellolights.com carries these (formerly www.lampsnow.com ?).

    Bigperm,
Do you have a glass top on your tank that the jbj is sitting on? If so the jbj is self contained with a splash sheild, you could remove your glass top and set the jbj right on top. That would allow air exchange. If that isnt a possibility perhaps you could raise them maybe 1" or 2" and have fans behind them blowing through. I know that their is not enough room inside those units for a fan,you will have to improvise somehow.
