    Question 10k Vs 10k

    Guys:

I just ordered a 250W PFO Dual HQI ballast. I am currently using AB 10K on my 250W Hamilton set up and when the new ballast arrives, I would like to get a new bulb within 3 months. I am sure my current ballast is not firing the AB correctly because the colors are different on each side. One side is more blue and one side is kinda yellow.

Anyway, I am trying to decide on the 10K bulb, should I stay with the AB or get the Ushio?? I have 4 55W PC and I want something that is crisp white so I can have a nice blue look. Any thoughts?? TIA.

Sounds like the issue may be the lamp. Have you tried switching the lamps around to verify? If so, you need to get the ballast fixed ot replaced.

As far as lamps go, both are good brands, and it really comes down to personal preference in my opinion. I use the Ushio as they are cheaper for me, but I wouldn't hesitate to get the AB.

Thank you for your input. I did try to switch the bulbs and the result is the same. Anyway, I will be using the new ballast. I heard Ushio is more blue than the AB when firing it with the HQI Ballast, any thoughts on that?? TIA.

I used the AB 250W 10k for about 10 months. I liked them, and for me, they are about $15 cheaper per bulb.

I switched to the Ushio 10k about a month ago. They are more expensive, but the have a much nicer color IMO (whiter, bluer) than the AB. I have read talk in the past of Ushio being closer to a true 10k and AB being closer to 9k in reality...

The other benefit is that the bulb is an inch or two shorter than the ABs. I will probably try to squeeze two 50/50 VHOs in my hood due to the bit of extra space...

Either way, I'll be sticking with Ushio from now on...

    Just 2c...

I would vote for Ushio over AB as I had both and change the AB after two month to Ushio. Just so much crispier white look, but AB with some supplementing of 03 looks nice as well so it boils down to personal preference. I chose Ushio's and don't regret. They're fired by icecap 250w ballasts. Had no problems with start or anything else.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

I've got the PFO dual ballast (Standard magnetic ballast).

I've got 2 110W VHO actinics with the Ushio's and I love the color -- the corals look great -- tank looks really clean.
