PAR comparison chart
In the process of deciding on a "final", hahaha, lighting system which would enable me to keep high light demanding clams and corals I tried to put into perspective some of the data available on various lamps including Sanjay Joshi's latest article in the 2002 November issue of Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine.
I was concerned about UV irradiance and the effect of shielding on PAR. I also wanted to compare the 150W DE lamps with 175W and 250W moguls. Sanjay Joshi's article in the 2002 Marine Fish and Reef has been misinterpreted and led to some confusion as to the capability of double ended 150 watt bulb to produce as much or more PAR than higher wattage bulbs. Therefore I tried to extrapolate the data to compare the same wattage bulbs with and without a reflector. Again, the choice of reflector could greatly skew the results. Anyway, the project grew and I thought other people may be interested. Anyone can complete the chart using the values in the Notes. Because in many instances only one bulb was used in the testing and individual bulbs can vary, sometimes significantly, the data should be interpreted with caution. Since I am far from being an expert on the subject, any comments will be greatly appreciated. the project was helpful for me. I will steer away from AB bulbs, too much UV, and will be very careful in deciding on the type of reflector I use. Perhaps Sanjay or someone else will do a comparison study of various reflectors. It also helped me decide that I should have 250watters and not 150s. I will wait to purchase clams and SPS until I have a new set up and a chiller since the 250s would put me over the edge. Now I need help posting this chart. I have it on a Microsoft spreadsheet in both Works and Excel. The "save as" feature does not offer me any of the valid file extensions listed below. Any ideas anybody? I tried to copy and paste it into the text of this message but it does not work. Claude |

If you don't mind mailing me the spreadsheet, I can get the chart posted for you.
You could also copy the chart (right click and copy) and then paste it in you favortie photo editor. Save it as a .gif or .jpg then you should be able to post it. HTH |

John:
I did e-mail Scott the chart. I guess he couldn't post it. I was able to get it posted in the Fisnet library and at Reef Central. I'm not all that computer savvy so I don't know how to get you to it. You'd have to do a search to find it, it's been a few weeks. Let me know if you're successful. I'm really sorry I couldn't post it on this board. Claude |

Sorry guys, the holidays has me a bit back-logged.
![]() I originally thought you had put this in a graphical chart which is why I mentioned the .jpg format. Since it is in Excel, here is the link: http://reefland.com/PAR.xls Regards, |
