Do I need extra lighting? Please help
I have a 55 gal fish anf reef. The lighting that I have is a smart light canopy..Approx 130 to 140 total watts....Now my problem is I was told that to have live rock, I would need more lighting.I have another canopy that I can put on the tank that has 2 bulbs that are a total of another 80 watts....I just received some red mushrooms and green stripped mushrooms.Which are at the bottom of the tank. Will this extra lighting harm them?Along with that I ha a pearl coral that is not doing well and some colony polyops that are barley opened....All water is great and water flow everything is intack..Worried if I need this extra lighting, and will it be to much for the mushrooms.?Thanks for all the info.....Want to learn!!!Thanks Oceanreef...

I think we need some more specifics, as far as what types of bulbs are they, color tempature, (6500, 10000, actinic....) as an example I had a 55 gallon reef with 2 55W 10000K and 2 55W actinic 03 Power Compact bulbs. It worked very well for me, until my wife decided we need SPS corals... then came the Metal Halides, which I just put on my tank yesterday...
But having total 130, or 140 watts over a 4ft tank seems low, but if they are "daylight" color tempature then it should be fine for Mushrooms and other medium light softies... IMO Good Luck, Mike |
