Ick!

I've been pouring fish store tank water into my dp tank and now i think my tanks infested with ick. my yellow clown goby has ick all over it, it's the only fish in there. so the question is...

1.do i have to take down my whole tank to catch this goby for qt?
2.if the goby grows immune to ick in the dp (highly doubt that) would the ick die off in the dp?
3.how to rid all of ick in the dp tank. i would just leave the tank empty but my tank is still pretty new and i wanted a fish to at least establish it with some more bacteria.
4.for quarintine tank could i use my dp tank water??! stupid question
or would i have to start a whole new cycle.

Re: Ick!

take the fish out of the display tank.. you can use the display water it your quarantine tank.. you need to treat the quarantine tank with copper.. but do not put that water back in your display tank... leave your display tank without any fish for at least 6 weeks..... or do a hyposalinity treatment in your display tank as long as there are no corals or anemones.. they dont take hypo salinity well... you can research all these methods on this site by the search link...

Re: Ick!

You ask some good questions, which when answered probably will lead to other good questions. Some of your questions are answered in this more elaborate post: Marine Ich - Myths and Facts

Assuming you have correctly made the diagnosis that this is Marine Ich (MI) Cryptocaryon irritans:

1. Catch and remove all fish to treat them, even if they don't appear to be infected. I don't know about having to 'tear down' your aquarium. There are other ways to catch fish, but you're the best judge: How to Catch Fish -or- Goin' Fisin'

2. Marine Ich does in fact become less infective over many, many generations of reproduction. But if you continue to introduce new Marine Ich, it will not 'go away.' This process of the MI becoming weak takes about 11 months and if you have this amount of time (which it sounds like you don't want to invest) then you might as well do it correctly for 8 weeks (see 3. below).

3. Leave your display tank system without fish for 8 weeks. All the obligate parasites of Marine Ich will die. You can establish the bacteria without fish. Use the clean up crew and the additions of foods to the aquarium to create the bacteria population for the nitrification process: Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium

4. Initially, yes. Water from the infected display tank/system may be used only as the first water in the QT. After the initial setup of the QT, no more of this water should go into the QT, otherwise the QT keeps being reinfected with MI. However, from your post you seem to imply that this display tank/system water will help establish the biological filter in the QT, or in some way perform nitrification on its own. Not. Nothing makes Mother Nature move faster. The biological filter in the QT will take weeks to establish itself properly. Use a sponge filter and the other recommendations here: A Fish Quarantine Process

Good luck!
