trochus snail help

Hi all,

firstly im new to this forum so Hi to all.

Now, im having an issue with trochus snails and to some extent turbo snails. My amonia is 0.1, nitrate and nitrite are 0. i suspect the amonia is higher due to my snails dying.

basically i have obtained 3 snails from 2 differnet stores. the first two died in a day, the third one never came out of his shell in 14 hours. (just got him). i cannot tell if he is also dead, but it is worrying that he wont come out?

i did the bag treatment for about 45 mins,

now the only thing i can think of is my temperature, its 29 C. which is a touch high, but the store has its tanks at 27 c. so i would not think 2 c would make that much difference.

now i also have hermit crabs (doing great) and chonch snails (bought same time as first lot of trochus) also doing great.

so im perplexed as to why the trochus snails are doing so bad? the research i have done said that they are one of the hardest?

any help would be good.

Also my tank is 5 months old and is new so no copper.

thanks guys and girls

Re: trochus snail help

sorry, floated the bag in the water for about 30 mins, then open and let a little water in for 15 mins.

Re: trochus snail help

ok, i will give this a try. just seems odd that the other 2 snails i got (not sure of name chonch i think) are doing fine, and i gave them the same treatment.

Re: trochus snail help

can anyone think of anything else that may be the issue? im taking a water sample to the LFS for testing (although i have done my own and like i said everything is fine).

Just would hate for some more of these attractive creatures to die

Re: trochus snail help

One of the concerns about snails is exactly where the snails come from. If the snails came from waters that are cooler, then they will essentially cook in our aquariums. Many places get snails in and don't think of just what kinds of waters they came from. It takes snails a few days to a few months to die in the aquarium from temperatures they are not used to.

Snails and crabs are very sensitive to water quality. Actually one of the things overlooked is the amount of copper in the water. A copper test kit can't tell if there is enough copper there to harm snails and crabs, because our home test kits measure copper in the range that affects fishes. So copper, even low concentrations can cause their death. It is the same for many of the metals dissolved in water -- snails and crabs can't handle these kinds of contaminants, that don't show up in our test kits.

What kind of source water are you using?

You may want to read up on snails not only from the reference wozza provided, but also:
Snails and hermits dying!

Good luck!

Re: trochus snail help

i use R/O water, so not sure.

Im having the water tested today. the only thing that bothers me about all this is the other snails and hermits are doing great.

I guess reading the other posts it could be just taking longer to die but i hope not.

anyways i will keep you posted thanks for the wonderful responce think i will enjoy this forum.
