Re: royal blue damsel

WELCOME TO REEFLAND!

The temporary loss of color is usual for two primary reasons: A night-time color to help the fish hide; or a stressor is affecting the fish.

You mentioned adding LR. This can be a bit tricky to a marine system already established and running. Live rock, even the best that can be bought sometimes runs the risk of die-off, creating poisons in the tank. The addition of LR that is not cured would be a certain reason for the fish's response.

Have you checked for ammonia and nitrites? Check all water parameters immediately. I'd check to be sure they are all still in order at least. You don't mention if you have a skimmer. If so, is it drawing any extra or unusual organics out of the water?

To be on the safe side, I would recommend an immediate large water change (over 80%), following general water changing guidelines: how do I do a water change?

Make sure you are using pure source water: WATER - Source and NSW

If the fish's behavior does not straighten out, the water parameters check out, and you've done the water change, then perform another large water change and hope the fish recovers.

Keep us informed.

Re: royal blue damsel

If you think or know that the live rock was not cured properly or is the problem -- remove it from the aquarium and keep it in its own bucket of saltwater.

Re: royal blue damsel

"Cured" means different things to different people. As most aquarists know, cured rock has to be cured again before its use. It depends on where you got it and the conditions it came from.

If you're interested, there is a post about live rock: What is Live Rock, Anyway?
