Hello to all...I purchased a Potters angel a week and a half ago...shes in QT...all was fine til I noticed yesterday that her one eye, the clear part, is beginning to buldge slightly and is getting cloudy...any suggestions on what this might be and a specific treatment for this condition would be appreciated...thanks Denny

Re: cloudy eyed potters angel
Denny,
Usually one cloudy eye is not a concern. A properly fed, healthy marine fish can mend a cloudy eye. On the other hand a cloudy eye can be a symptom for one of many other more serious condition. The most common cause is a bacterial infection. You can choose to do nothing other than provide the highest water quality and best nutrition, or you can fall back on treating the fish with an antibiotic. Either is a viable way forward. Regardless of what path you choose (to treat or not to treat), you need to find out why the fish got into this condition and correct the problem. High bacterial counts in the water (not enough water changes and left over food and waste build up) or deficient nutrition, or a combo of these two is more often the cause.

Re: cloudy eyed potters angel
Hello Lee...First let me start by thanking you and the other moderators on this forum...it is a blessing to have such knowledgable aquarist to give us advise which at times I have hessitated to follow through with...dummy me...after having a complete tank wipeout I finally setup a 10 Gal. QT which didn't cost me much at all...I also follow your advise on what to feed my fish, VHP and bio-encapsulated brine shrimp w/spirulina...my potters loves it!...my question is this...I placed a sponge filter in the QT which was inoculated in my display, all parameters are normal in my QT...since I'm going to be keeping the potters in the QT for 8 weeks how often should I change the water and what percentage...also to be on the safe side I'm going to purchase an antibiotic for her...thanks again Denny

Re: cloudy eyed potters angel
Thanks for the kind words, Denny.
I myself change 50% of my QT water once a week. However, this is not set in stone. If something is going on (e.g., too much organic build up) I increase the frequency (holding the % constant). If you are good at controlling the change (matching parameters of new water with that of the old water -- see how do I do a water change?) then you should have no fear of a large % change. Likewise, if the problem is a build up of wastes, change more frequently. If there is a need for a treatment, change according to medicine instructions or in the case of an accidental overdose, etc., etc. I just want to impress upon you that there is no hard and fast answer to your question. If the bacterial infection turns systemic, you want an antibiotic that goes inside the fish to kill systemic bacteria. That would be like Maracyn Two for Saltwater Fishes.

Re: cloudy eyed potters angel
Lee,
I have an angel that is not eating and has developed cloudy eye in both eyes. If I use the Maracyn two how long would I have to treat it? Thanks, Sheila |

Re: cloudy eyed potters angel
The fish will need to be moved to a Quarantine Tank (QT) for treatment.
The proper medication is Maracyn Two for Saltwater Fish. You begin with a dose that twice the recommended first dosage. Following instructions on the label, the treatment continues for 5 days. If the symptoms haven't subsided, reduced or gone away entirely, the treatment continues on for another 5 days.
