Re: Table/Contents - Link List

The procedure for a bacterial infection is to identify the bacteria and then choose the correct antibiotic.

The identification includes taking samples to make cultures, staining and using other lab techniques to identify the bacteria, then finally performing antibiotic tests if the bacteria is unknown or unidentifiable. Disks of antibiotics are placed on a agar media plate and the unknown or unidentified bacteria seeded onto the plate. The antibiotic that 'works best' at inhibiting growth is then chosen.

The process takes about 48-72 hours and is the only sure way to treat bacterial infections and to recommend specific antibiotics. Then the veterinarian prescribes the dose.

Few marine aquarists will go through this process so the use of antibiotics has no pat or set recommendations.

Sometimes the 'cure' is not an antibiotic. In order to prevent antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, it is best to avoid the use of antibiotics and instead try to discover the cause of the infection and remove the cause and allow the fish to heal itself. Bacterial infections in Marine fish that are healthy, provided the proper nutrition, housed and kept in quality water can handle bacterial infections in tanks free of parasites.
