Re: fish species

Thanks for posting. This is a good question.

The large or full-sized Angelfishes usually attain lengths of over 12 inches (30 cm). It isn't so much the length, as much as these fish are very 'bulky' and they need 'foraging space.' That is, their weight is greater than say many of the Butterflyfishes of similar length. Angels such as the French Angel (Pomacanthus paru) get over 18 inches (45 cm).

Some of these Angels are marked and colored very attractively and, like most Angels, they have personality. It is some of these traits that I'm sure you find attractive. I know I do!

But some of these Angels only show their full markings as adults, making their size large and not suitable for aquarists that don't have large display aquariums. The target aquarium size would be 240 gallons or more for these large fishes.

I'm afraid your aquarium size would hold a juvenile or a transitioning Angelfish fairly well, but as it grew, it would have to be moved or failing to find a new home, would probably die early from space stress. So to answer your question, no full-sized adult marine Angelfish should be kept in your tank.

If you have a place to take your fish to live out its life when it gets too large, you could choose a single young (juvenile) Angelfish for your aquarium. A 2" (5 cm) or smaller Goldflake Angelfish (Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus) will do fine there for two or three years, as would the Rock Beauty (Holacanthus tricolor) of that or smaller size.

The large Angelfish can be kept in a smaller aquarium during the juvenile stage without harm to their well being. It is a fish that is suitable for a small aquarium when the fish is small, then moved to larger quarters as it gets larger.

These Angelfish require more care and better conditions (i.e., excellent water quality) than most other marine fishes. The older they are, the more challenging they are to keep. Their aquarium needs to be an old, mature aquarium: The Mature Aquarium

What Angels are suitable for that aquarium would be one or two of the Dwarf Angels.
