want to add a fish
I have a arc eyed hawkfish, yellow tail damsel, true clownfish and a sand sifting starfish. I currently do not have any corals, but will eventually.
I would like to add one or two more fishes that are reef safe. I've been looking into tangs but most will need ample room to swim. I have a 90g tank. I would like a yellow or blue tang. Various sources say that tangs need from a range of 30-125 gallons. That's a big difference! What does everyone think? I do not want to buy one if my tank is too small. Any other suggestions other than tangs? I am scpetical of smaller fish since my hawkfish seems to be ravenous all the time. Sometimes will eat my hermits. |

Re: want to add a fish
The Hawkfish will be the pivotal determinant in what else to add to the aquarium
A very small tang would be okay in the 90 for a year or two but wouldn't do well with the Hawkfish. Tangs require about a 6 foot long aquarium, or longer for them to be kept properly. Considering the Hawkfish and the aquarium you have, I wouldn't consider a Tang addition. You'll need to find fishes that are compatible with the Hawkfish. The best group are the damsels, but you have a couple already. An appropriate Wrasse may be a reasonable choice. You might want to go through some books or listings of wrasses to find those that remain small. There are a couple of Puffers that stay below 6 inches that may be a good choice, too. Since you want a reef tank, you'll have to be on the look out not only for compatibility with the Hawkfish, but with what other marine life you want to keep.

Re: want to add a fish
Leebca, may I ask what you mean by compatible with the Hawkfish? I'm only asking because I've considered getting one, though not an arc eyed. Sorry for hijacking this thread but am interested in what the problems with Hawkfish are.

Re: want to add a fish
Speaking in generalities, Hawkfish (like their name implies) are predatory carnivores. They are not a bad community fish, except they may attack a wide variety of invertebrates and marine fishes. In a community tank, they have to be more or less carefully matched with the other members of the tank.
Before you bring a particular species of Hawkfish home, make sure you've read up on what is known about them and what their proper husbandry requires.

Re: want to add a fish
hey nabee, you should probably consider returning the hawkfish (if the dealer lets you) . then you could add the new fish that you want. for a 90 gallon, it sound soo vague to have only four fish.
