Hi im really new to this website, but i have a question.i have seen some butterflies and dwarf angelfishes in some reef tanks containing mushrooms, leather corals, xenias, and more, but in all of the books that i own, it says that they like to nip on corals so its not a good reef specimen. please tell me if i can keep a butterfly in a reef tank because I love these beautiful fish, and i would definetly love it if I was able to keep it in me reef tank.

First off, WELCOME TO REEFLAND!
To answer your question, the Pyramid Butterfly is totally reef-safe. Here's a link to a thread started by one of the more experienced aquarists on this board, and his experience with them: The butterflies have landed

Re: Butterflies for a reef tank???
Quite often, Butterflyfishes can't be trusted in a reef aquarium. Those that workout the best are the Butterflyfishes that are carnivores, like the Copperband.
However, even a carnivorous Butterflyfish and Angelfish will pick at sick invertebrates. You might want to read this: Reef-Safe Fishes

Re: Butterflies for a reef tank???
I have had luck with Copperbands as well, however that is not a guarentee by any means. I also tried a Auriga Butterfly, and that went well until I ran out of aiptasia! Once the anemones were gone, he turned to LPS like Galaxea, and Hammer corals...

Re: Butterflies for a reef tank???
I have a copper band and it wipped out all of my bristle worms. Other then that he has done fine. I also have a Goldflake angel and a flame angle and they have been fine around my corals. But my flame angel loved my clam.
other then that nothing else has happened. I have had the flame for 4 years, copper band for 1 year, and the goldflake for 3 months. |
