    Reddish gill - bacterial infection?

    HI Lee,

I have recently purchased some clownfish (newly acclimated for 2 days), they are direct from the breeder.

Today I noticed that one of them had a bloody gill (reddish gill part) and breathing fast. These are captive bred clownfish and I put them thru a FW dip acclimation.

If you noticed another individual swam across, it is not a standard 'pattern'. The video also attached:

Attached are the picture of the gill, the other fish do not have that dark reddish spot. I am guessing it might be bacterial infection, just wanted to consult you.

    Thanks

    Good photos and video.

I'm not convinced it is any pathological condition. Are you sure the fish didn't look like this from the start?

It could be a temporary skin condition, like Hyper-Melaninization or conceivably it could be an enhanced marking of this particular fish within its species. I didn't notice any alarming breathing rate.

I got quite a few of these clownfish, so that is not an enhanced marking. Only one fish seems to have that reddish mark, one side is darker than the other it seems.

I might just be a bit paranoid because one of these clownfish died after one day of arrival and a breathing problem and only after it died, I notice a deep dark red patch on the gills on the corpse.

There's always a remote change of gill damage, ruptured blood vessel, or even a gill fluke. But all of these can only be determined through taking gill clippings and direct observation.

I think I'd wait to see if anything develops. To be conservative, you can isolate the fish and treat with an antibiotic. If it is damage or rupture, a secondary bacterial infection is possible.

    Hi Lee,

Just wanted to say that you are very darn good, after two weeks' time, it's almost certain that specific fish probably just have the red patch as a birth mark type of thing since it's been eating and behaving a bit more normally now.

Thanks for your help as always
