oxygenation in water
Hi,
I am starting to get fish in my tank and I was just making sure that I have propper equipment. I was worried about the flow and oxygen in my tank. I only have one out-take filter head and was wondering if I need to add another head to increase oxygen flow. Should I get something else, or is my tank fine like it is? (tank 60 gallons) All my corals have been doing very well and i have had my two clowns for about two days now and they seem fine. Please help! |

Re: oxygenation in water
If the system is mature and you've had corals living successfully for a few months, then I'd say your circulation was good enough.
For a reef tank, your turnover/flow rate should add up to no less than 16 the volume of the system per hour. Preferably 20X for some corals and marine life. Ideally, your 60 would have a flow rate total of about 1000 gallons per hour. So long as the circulation moves the surface of the water in the display and system, then the water is probably exchanging enough gas. The room the aquarium is in needs to be ventilated to avoid an excess of carbon dioxide building up in the room and thus building up in the water. There are oxygen test kits if you ever feel the need to actually test for it.
