Exclamation Vlamingi Tang with bubble on eye

I have a vlamingi tang that literally has a bubble on its eye. It doesn't seem to be popeye. It started out as a gas bubble of some sort on the eye, and than seemed to slowly move its way up and behind the eye. It than appeared to be popeye. I pulled all the fish out and treated him with maracyn. The bulging eye had no reaction to the antibiotic. He is still eating great. I than have had all the fish in hypo for the treatment of ich for the past two weeks, and the bubbles seem to of came back out from behind the eye. they are surrounding the eye now. The eye itself does not seem to be cloudy or damaged. I am guessing he got an abrasion or something from the tank. Or possibly spined by my rabbitfish. I am not sure. I had read somewhere of people releasing the pressure of this with a hypodermic needle???? I am not sure at this point what I should do b/c it does not seem to be getting better. I will get some pictures up later this evening.

thank you in advance!!!
Crystal

Crystal,

Sorry to hear of the problems. Pictures are needed.

Tell me how did you use the Maracyn. Tell me also which Maracyn you used, was it Two or One? and was it the Maracyn for saltwater or freshwater fish?

The fish is being treated for Marine Ich also? Are your fishes in a hospital tank or where are you treating them?

More information about the system you have and its size, the background of the fish (how long you've had it, from an LFS or online, its size, what it is eating, etc.), and the other marine life in your system are all relevant things to answering your question.

If you can, please post all water quality measurements -- the exact readings of: phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, pH, specific gravity, and temperature range.

It was maracyn 2 for saltwater fish. I did the dosing as directed on the package. Since then i have just been soaking the food in it. They were just in regular range saltwater in the hospital tank while treating. After treatment with the maracyn and no results I put them into hypo slowly b/c the ich was getting pretty bad. Since then they have been getting their food soaked in the maracyn 2. I just recieved the whole system. a 72 bowfront that the person had owned with the fish for 3 years. The fish is about 3 inches long. It's other tankmates are a purple tang, an orange spot rabbit fish, maroon clown, and two bangaii cardinals. They are in a 40 breeder hospital tank. None of the other fish are showing any signs of disease. As for water quality. phosphates, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia are all 0 I do not know alk and calc as i do not have a test for that. ph is 8.3, specific gravity is about 1.024 (refractometer is used for this) temp ranges from 79-81. The water quality is tested daily in the hospital tank and I have kept the specific gravity at 1.009 and that is tested with the refractometer also. Ph is kept up with a buffer, and nitrates nitrites ammonia etc are all kept at 0. Using water changes and filtration.

Re: Vlamingi Tang with bubble on eye

Please be sure to read this about Marine Ich: Marine Ich - Myths and Facts. Even if the fish aren't showing/presenting, they need to be treated for the parasite.

The features definitely appear to be gas. That is bacteria at work most likely.

Sending Maracyn Two down the intestinal track won't get to the bacteria systemically. Maracyn in the water goes into the fish and can get to the bacteria in and around the ocular nerve area. I would switch the treatment process and put the Maracyn Two into the water at the recommended dosage (if this is hyposaline water).

You may just have to focus on the Marine Ich problem and let this take its course until the MI has resolved. These two are a bit tricky to handle at the same time.

Make sure the fishes are getting the best nutrition. The Tang should be offered seaweed (not necessarily Nori) twice a day at least. Soak foods in immune boosters: Fish Immune Boosters along with vitamins and fat supplements. With regards to foods, get some ideas here: Feeding Marine Fish and Fish Nutrition

Keep us posted.
