Removal of quickcure ?
Hi LEE,
Just wondering if there is a way to remove Quickcure mediation after using it on a semi-reef system? Quickcure is just malachite green & formalin, I understand that malachite green will dye the silicon and LR, but how ethal is it to the other invertebrates & corals like copper based medication? I would assume formalin can be removed with water change and it does not get absorb into anything except the small tint of residue. (Yep, I remembered that treatment should be carry out in barebottom QT, but with the amount of fish population my sponge filter would not be able to handle the load so I treated the whole system (bare bottom w/ sponge filter & a few pieces of base rock seeded).) Thanks ![]() |

Re: Removal of quickcure ?
Low levels of Malachite Green should not be problematic for most marine life. Some might have a problem, but that is just a way of making sure someone doesn't accuse me of making a mistake!
If the original medication specified 'reef safe' then I would assume its concentration would be low enough to not adversely affect these lifeforms. As an interesting note, in those low concentrations, Malachite Green is not known to cure much of anything. It's one reason that for the most part such reef-safe products don't work for everyone.

Re: Removal of quickcure ?
Actually, I dont really care if the marine lifeforms die or not, not exactly the best way to put it, but there are only pods, bristle worms & some sponges on LR. But my only worry is the aftermath, if the LR can be used back in a reef tank, I am not sure if malachite green will slow leak out like how copper get suck into calcium based material.
My clownfish breeder buddy & I found that the only cure to that mysterious white film & fast breathing disease is quickcure (malachite green & formalin), it works somewhat, so I suspect it is more of an external parasite in nature. The closest aquaculture labs we found are half away across the country so any live specimen probably wont arrive alive. The manufacturer AP did put a warning of not use in a reef tank or display tank, in my situation it is more of a clownfish growout/holding tank with sponge filter & LR (for seeding biological filtration purposes). So I do not believe it is made as a reef-safe medication. Thanks LEE |

Re: Removal of quickcure ?
In that case, then the concentration is probably higher and some lifeforms will die off. You should care in the sense that when and if they die, they will cause water pollution. So watch for that.
It will bind with the different materials in the tank, but any leaching back will be nominal and not adversely affect any lifeforms. As far as the LR is concerned, if you're not interested in the worms, etc., then it will still function as a site for bacteria performing biological filtration.
