hippo tang is missing a piece

Hello,

I have a new hippo tang, he is tiny at around 1 inch from head to the end of his tailfin.

He is very active and eating like a pig! He loves mysis shrimp and live brine.

This morning i noticed he had a small chunk missing from his tailfin. In the tank there are 2 ocerallis clown fish and about 6 hermit crabs.

Who is the most likely candidate for chomping him?

Will his tailfin heal up? Or is he scarred for life?

Cheers,

Thanks for posting.

The fin will heal up to the way is should be/was providing that the fish is given proper nutrition and care. The foods you are feeding this fish are not the best foods for this fish. This fish is a herbivore. When they are very young like your fish, it will eat a mixed diet of pods and algae. You need to provide algae in its diet. As it gets older, it will and should depend more and more on marine algae.

Provide vitamin and fat supplements. Keep in mind that a fish that "eats like a pig" could be a starving fish. Although it has enough food, it may not be the right kind of food, so the fish is starving for the nutrients it needs.

Please read the following posts so you have an idea of what I mean:

Re: hippo tang is missing a piece

I'll rephrase, He is eating very well for a blue tang of his size.

I forgot to mention that the brine im feeding him has been fed up on alge. When they go into the water they are basically green. I forget the name of the alge but people who know more than I do praise it highly.

Its good to hear that he will recover, I assumed he would.

Thank you once again for your help.
