    Running copper

When treating a tank with copper, I assume you take out the carbon. However, is it ok to keep the skimmer and the UV running? If not, then how do you keep the water clean? I talked to a pretty successfull LFS and they run copper continuously in all their systems. They keep water clean, and have a big protein skimmer servicing all the tanks.

    Re: Running copper

Ornamental fishes should only be treated with Cupramine. Since this medication is combined with an organic molecule, both the carbon and skimmer are turned off. The UV will likely disrupt the chemical bond and must also be turned off.

Follow the recommendations on the medication you use.

Since copper should only be used to cure an ill fish, the QT should be bare and without any of these kinds of equipment. The water quality is controlled for the short time of quarantine by siphoning out wastes and uneaten foods, running a functional biological filter, and water changes.
