    Amyloodinium

    lee,

A fellow reefer had an outbreak in his tank and as he described it, it appeared to be velvet. I took on the responsibility of treating his livestock and 2 died in transit and 1 very shortly after. I began medicating cupramine reaching near full dosage (salifert & API tests read between 0.25 and 0.50 ppm) 3 days ago. I perform daily FW dips accompanied by ampicillin (do not want to dose antibiotics in tank but want to stop fin rot on one of the fish), lasting about 3-5 mins depending on stress (mostly my stress). Only 1 fish shows signs of velvet and he is greatly improving going from complete dust cover to very limited dots now. The other fish show no obvious symptoms and breathe regularly.

I am worried about my biological filter and want to limit the exposure of copper if at all possible. Would it be unwise to remove the 4 outwardly healthy fish to a QT number 2 at this juncture or would you recommend that I keep them all in the cupramine for the full 14 days at current dosage?

    Re: Amyloodinium

I would strongly recommend that all be kept together and finish the treatment. After the treatment, a hold for another 4 weeks is needed to verify the treatment worked. After that, move fish to whatever disease-free place you want.

Non-cleanable equipment in such a treatment becomes either disposable or useable only for fish quarantine and/or treatment at a later time.

Cleaning info can be found here: Marine System Clean Up Recommendations

The bacteria will adapt to the presence of copper, but may be killed by the other drug.
