    Hyposalanity question!!!

Ive heard many different stories of ppl using the Hyposalinty method, but my question is once it kills the parasites in the tank will they ever come back?? Cuz i know all fish have the Ich parasite internally and when they get stressed or bad water quality. ect.. The parasite show more. so i guess my queston is will hyposalanity actually kill the parasite inside the fish so that your tank will be Ich free FOREVER????????

OK from I have heard, read and from experience, ICK doesn't live "in" the fish it's actually in the water. When you see the white spots on the fish it's because they were stressed out. Even if you do all that hyposalinity stuff, once you do a water change, or buy coral, rock etc...you will more than likely add the parasite back in your tank. Juat keep your fish healthy and they should be ok. I use a UV sterilizer which seems to help with the problem, but it doesn't eliminate it. There is actually a really good thread in the health and disease forum by Leebca which gets into it in detail.

You need to have more information about the parasite. You'll find most of what you need to know in this post: Marine Ich - Myths and Facts

Sorry you won't read the link provided.

However, hyposalinity kills the free swimming parasites. Once they are all dead, the parasites are gone from the treatment tank. Only through the introduction of new parasites will they again show up.

    Absolutely wrong.

In other words, once you have rid your display tank of the parasite, the only way you can get it again is by introducing a new fish that is infected or by doing a water change that has the parasite in it. The BEST way is to QT ur new arrivals when you get them before you introduce them to your display. Also by using your own RO/DI system and making the water yourself for water changes.

    Re: Hyposalanity question!!!

The parasite can be introduced through any 'foreign' water source including water in bags containing invertebrates, or water trapped inside of a snail's shell, etc., etc.

If the water source is natural sea water (NSW), there is a small risk, but that is a very small risk. If the NSW is collected off-shore at the surface, there is almost a 0% chance of collecting the parasite. Even if one odd is collected, they can only live a few days without a host and there is another high opportunity for it to die before it gets to the aquarium with fish in it.

If the NSW was collected near shore, then I think pollutants outweigh the risk of disease.
