Top off water. lid on or off? stir stick?

Should replacement fresh water be keep with the lid on or off? Or does it matter? I have 7 4l containers I fill with freshwater to keep in hand for top offs...till i make an auto top off.

Salterwater mix. I currently leave the lid on my 20G pail to save heat. Should leave lid on or leave it off or does it matter?

What would you suggest to use as a stir stick for the saltwater pail? What would it be made of, wood, pvc, not metal I would assume. Or again does it matter.

I would really wish you'd review the table of contents link I've provided below so you know the topics covered here.

Mix saltwater like this: How to Make a Successful Water Change

Keep source water with lid on, but for no more than a few days before use. It may begin to grow things, depending upon the purity.
