Royal Tang cured and then Icked Again....

OK so i have had a Royal Tang for about 6 weeks now. About 2.5 inches long, but when i first got her she was fine, had her in the OT tank but was acting strange checked the water and it was borderline bad so i put her in my MT.

She then came down with Ick first, then velvet when i got the Bio filter going in my QT tank. She was in the QT tank for 4 weeks at least, and looked great eating well and no signs of any parasites for at least 10 days. So i figured she was ready to be put back in the main a week ago.... boy was i wrong.

She proceeded to contract Ick again so back in the QT tank she went.

    Ok 55g Tank stats:

    2 ocellaris clowns
    1 royal dottyback
    1 Emperor Angel Juv. 2"

    ...snails,crabs and shrimp.

    ph 8.2
    salinity 1.023
    ammonia 0ppm
    nitrites 0ppm
    nitrates 10-15ppm

    Water is D.I.

I guess my question is do i have to take everyone out for 6-8 weeks even though they have no external signs of Ick? I only have a 10g Qt i would think i would have to get another tank to house all the fish?

    Any help is appriciated Thanks

    Anthony

From what I can understand, you are on the right track. All fish out for 8 weeks; treat ALL fishes even if they do not display the parasite until cured; return fish to display system.

    Some other observations:
You need to be tracking and controlling at least:
    Calcium
    Magnesium
    Alkalinity
in addition to what you've reported.

The aquarium you have is too small for that Tang. Right now the Tang needs to be in an aquarium that is no less than 6 feet long. In a few years, it should be moved to a tank no less than 8 feet long. Tangs don't make very good captive marine fishes because of their need for tank length.

I love juvenile Emperor Angels. However, they grow fast when fed properly and that fish will need a 180 gallon aquarium in about 2-3 years. Large Angels are also known for their need for swimming space and water volume. When the juvenile's pattern begins to change, that is the sign of when it's time for the larger tank.

If you have any questions not answered in the sticky posts, just ask. This index of sorts lists some of the topics in these Forums: Table/Contents - Link List

    Good luck!

Re: Royal Tang cured and then Icked Again....

The tank has been set up with fish for 6 months(8 with LR/S 62# and 2" bed) with the 10g sump, I have been testing for calcium, but not the others.

I am getting a larger tank prob 180 to 200 in a few weeks because after i got the angel i knew i would need a bigger one. He is not displaying any adult patterns yet. I have grown attached, he/she is just like a dog, when ever i go near the tank he swims to the side that i am at. LOL

No one answered but i am guessing i need a bigger QT, or just another tank to separate all the fish?

    Thanks

To quarantine all those fishes together, I would suggest you have/use a 29 gallon. If the Tang wasn't in the group, you might go smaller, but they need swimming room.

The juv. Emp. Angels are very precious. They are very brave and forward, with a very good intellect (IMHO). As they get older they will become more reclusive and 'careful.' But still they can 'see you' and know you.

Actually, the Tang is what needs the 29 -- even if it was alone. But the 10 and 20 would work but putting extra stress on the Tang.
